South Korea’s SK Telecom has announced that it is the first mobile operator in the world to exceed the 1 million 5G customer mark.

The company said that its 5G customer base was expanding twice as fast a 4G at the same period of that market. It said that this milestone “further solidifies its leadership in the field of 5G”.

Ryu Young-sang, VP and head of the mobile network operator business at SK Telecom, said: “SK Telecom will continuously develop innovative contents and services specially designed and optimised for 5G network to provide differentiated experiences to our 5G subscribers.”

The company’s 5G subscribers now comprise more than 3.5% of its total subscriber base of 28 million.

SK Telecom has attracted its first million 5G subscribers in just 140 days after launching the world’s first 5G smartphone on 3 April. It took eight months – about 240 days – for SK Telecom to connect its first million 4G subscribers when LTE became available.

SK Telecom said 5G service is also driving up customers’ data usage. The average monthly data usage of customers who switched devices from LTE to 5G has increased about 65% from 20.4GB to 33.7GB.

It added that the recent launch of Galaxy Note 10 5G is expected to further drive the increase of 5G subscribers.
