DE-CIX becomes first IX to connect with Microsoft ExpressRoute in Germany

DE-CIX has become the first Internet Exchange in Germany to offer direct connectivity to the Microsoft cloud service ExpressRoute in the German metropolis.

As a result of the new connection, Internet Service Providers, carriers and data centre operators immediately have access to Microsoft cloud services such as Microsoft Azure through the DE-CIX DirectCLOUD service. Until now, customers in Germany had to connect to Microsoft Cloud in Amsterdam – but this long winded route is no longer necessary.

In addition to the Microsoft implementation of cloud services, there are more than 50 other cloud providers connected to DE-CIX, including Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud as well as smaller regional companies and niche providers.

The DE-CIX DirectCLOUD service acts as an interface between internet service providers, companies and data centres on one side with cloud service providers on the other. Through an access point at DE-CIX they are directly connected with each other over a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN).

Back in March DE-CIX partnered with Datacenter One to offer DE-CIX services at Datacentre One sites in Leverkusen, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart. The collaboration begins with Datacenter One’s facility LEV1 in Leverkusen connected to DE-CIX, and will remain in place for the foreseeable future. Further DE-CIX sites will be created in the next few years because of the partnership.

Later that month, DE-CIX achieved a major milestone, becoming the first internet exchange operator to offer 400 Gigabit Ethernet (400GE) access technology to its customers. The news came in direct response from customers for more data capacity.
