Equinix has completed the purchase of an $11 million commercial building in Hamburg, Germany to extend its interconnection and data centre services to the area.
The company will spend a further $25 million to redevelop the space in a phase one build out. Located at Vierenkamp 1, Hamburg, Germany and purchased from Aspen REG 1. Management GmbH the site will be renamed Equinix HH1 International business Exchange (IBX).
The site will extend the company’s global interconnection platform called Platform Equinix into a fourth market in German to meet the growing demand for digital infrastructure connectivity in Europe.
“The German economy continues to be a source of strength in Europe, and demand for interconnection continues to rise to meet the IT transformation needs of businesses,” said Eric Schwartz, president, Equinix EMEA. “By expanding to a fourth market in Germany, Equinix will provide multinational customers with greater choice of where they build their digital edge.”
There is growing demand from the five million people in the Hamburg metro area and the growing technology community, which includes a number of e-commerce companies that need low latency, increased bandwidth and connectivity to industry-leading networking and cloud services providers.
In response, Equinix plans to refurbish the existing two-story industrial building, which is approximately 130,000 sqft in size, and develop the space into an interconnection and carrier-neutral colocation environment. In total the redevelopment project will deliver 375 cabinets in phase one with the ability to expand to 1,875 cabinets at full build.
Additionally, the HH1 IBX data centre will be strategically located close to the North Sea providing easy access to subsea cable landing stations, especially as Hamburg is considered a top interconnection point for cables connecting to Frankfurt.
The new $85 million, seven-story facility, called SG4, will provide interconnection and premium data centre services to help businesses with their IT transformation and cloud adoption initiatives.
