Orange is partnering with Google on its 6,600km Dunant subsea cable that connects the US to the French Atlantic coast which is due to complete by late 2020.
As the French landing partner for the new system, Orange will build and operate the landing station on the French Atlantic Coast and provide backhaul service in Paris. In turn, Orange will benefit from fibre-pairs with a capacity of more than 30Tbps per pair, enabling Orange to boost its capacity to meet growing data and content demands between Europe and the US.
“I am extremely proud to announce this collaboration with Google to build a new, cutting-edge cable between the USA and France,” said Stéphane Richard, chairman and CEO of Orange. “The role of submarine cables is often overlooked, despite their central role at the heart of our digital world. I am proud that Orange continues to be a global leader in investing, deploying, maintaining and managing such key infrastructure. Google is a major partner for Orange and this project reflects the spirit of our relationship.”
In addition, the partnership will strengthen Orange’s position to support the development of new uses for its consumer and enterprise customers in Europe and America. As well as support its position as an international leader in the wholesale space.
Dunant will be the first new subsea cable between the US and France for more than 15 years and will be built by TE SubCom.
“We are proud to be working with Google on this important cable system and to be helping to increase internet performance for all,” said Sanjay Chowbey, president of TE SubCom. “The Dunant cable system will be built using SubCom’s industry-leading A1 cable family, which is optimized for projects compatible with higher DCR. As a leading supplier of submarine cable systems, we look forward to continuing to work with our global partners to create more accessible and faster internet access.”
Featuring the most advanced technologies from different global equipment providers, the cable will be able to easily and quickly increase its bandwidth, and evolve in line with innovation.
