Sofia Connect plans Black Sea to Frankfurt connection and local data centre network

Bulgarian carrier Sofia Connect is building a new dark fibre network to connect data centres in the city plus a connection from the Black Sea cable to Frankfurt.

The data centre connection, with 192 fibres, will be in service at the beginning of August, Sofia Connect CEO Yuliy Nushev told Capacity at this week’s Capacity Europe East.

“It’s almost done. We are finalising the project of building our own fibre network in Sofia, connecting all neutral data centres. The network contains 2×96 fibres, fully diversified.”

At the same time Sofia Connect is working with Caucasus Cable System, the owner of a subsea cable from Balchik on the Bulgarian coast to Poti, Georgia, on the eastern coast of the Black Sea. This cable has a total capacity of 12.6 Tbps. There is already an inland connection from Georgia further east to Armenia.

“We are building a 1.2 Tbps DWDM network from Armenia throughout Bulgaria, reaching Frankfurt,” said Nushev. “The project will be finalised by the end of this year.” The link from Sofia to Frankfurt will be on rented fibre, said Sofia Connect.

In the longer term Sofia Connect is looking further east and to the Middle East. “Sofia Connect has become a well known and trusted partner for Middle East telecoms companies. We will keep our focus on this region and will expand our presence there.”
