GasLine plans expansion into Switzerland and Netherlands

German dark fibre carrier GasLine is planning to expand its network to Amsterdam in the Netherlands and into Switzerland.

GasLine, owned by Germany’s regional natural gas distribution companies, has already agreed a deal with its Swiss opposite number, GasCom, to interconnect their networks at Basel on the Swiss/German border.

GasCom has a similar background, being owned by three natural gas distribution companies that cover Switzerland and neighbouring Liechtenstein. It offers dark fibre connections as well as active optical systems and IP services to telehouses and data centres.

Meanwhile GasLine in Germany is starting to offer 10G and 100G wavelength services as well as pure dark fibre. “With dark fibre clients typically sign up for many years but we want to offer something that’s shorter term,” said an executive at Capacity Europe East in Sofia this week.

However GasLine has still not agreed a deal with a partner to take its network into Amsterdam in the Netherlands. “We are talking to a number of possible partners,” said the executive.

GasLine’s network covers all of Germany from the Polish border to the south of Bavarian. The connection towards Amsterdam will be made at the company’s point of presence in Venlo, west of Düsseldorf.
