Telefónica and Netflix strike Latin Amerian partnership

Telefónica has unveiled plans to integrate global streaming service Netflix into its TV and video platforms across Latin America as part of a new multi-year partnership.

The new deal covers a number of initiatives including the integration of Netflix into Telefónica Pay TV set-top boxes, access to Netflix from Movistar Play Video OTT service, and giving Telefónica customers the ability to pay a Netflix subscription through their telecoms service bill.

The deal will also see some Telefónica mobile data plan customers given the ability to stream its video content without using their standard data allowance.

The first launch is due to be carried out in the next few weeks, with further launches to be announced across the Latin America region in 2018.

Telefónica group CEO José María Álvarez-Pallete López tweeted about the deal, saying: “Just had a call with Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix. I think Telefónica customers are going to love this announcement, right Reed?” The tweet included a video between the two CEOs talking over the phone and signing the agreement.

“For Telefónica customers all over the world, better Netflix is coming,” Netflix CEO Hastings said. “We’re so excited to be working together.”
