Telefónica’s International Wholesale Services has deployed seven new Network Functions Hubs to boost adoption of virtualisation.
The new hubs were deployed across the Americas, Europe and Asia during 2017, Telefónica said, and will allows the Spain-based operator to offer connectivity and virtualisation for several services and network functions.
Nodes are already up and running in Mexico City, Miami, Boca Raton, London, Madrid, Sao Paulo and Hong Kong, with further deployments earmarked for 2018.
Demand for virtualised services is growing as more customers look to be permanently connected no matter where they are or what device they are using. Telefónica said it has invested heavily to develop both its fixed and mobile networks to support this.
“Virtualization is already an essential part of Telefónica’s networks, supporting the construction of a more flexible, agile and scalable network through the evolution towards the softwarization of the different elements and layers of the network,” Telefónica said.
“Moving from vertical architectures built over many networks and technologies with an unnecessary geographical spread, to simple and scalable architecture with shared infrastructure, Telefónica International Wholesale Services can deliver the best quality to its customers.
“This investment means Telefónica offers a fully virtualized network system, which enables its customers to access a virtualized platform, available worldwide, in order to extend their own infrastructure and products globally.”
