BT renews optical network development contract with Ciena

Under a renewed contract BT will continue to roll out Ciena's 6500 Converged Packet Optical Platform for a further five years.

The continued deployment of this solution will enable BT to grow its optical services business by building 100G capacity and nx100G high capacity wavelengths which is needed in order to provide high-speed connectivity services.

Commenting on the news, Keri Gilder, vice president & general manager of Ciena EMEA, said: “We are delighted about the extension to our strategic alliance with BT and look forward to supporting the business with a flexible, programmable and scalable solution that drives growth and incremental revenue for the business. With Ciena’s industry-leading 6500 platform, BT is future-proofing its networks and continuing to offer its UK customers fast and reliable solutions.”

The UK-wide deployment began in the summer of 2017 and is enabling BT to further upgrade its network capacity. Additionally, with Ciena’s 6500 offering, BT is in a strong position to efficiently manage traffic growth and the network has been designed to support the introduction of new technologies.

“With the growth in high bandwidth services it’s more important than ever that we continue to innovate and provide flexible network solutions to our customers. We’ve built a great relationship with Ciena over the past five years and we’re pleased to continue working with them,” added Neil McRae, chief architect at BT.

The news follows on from the first announcement made in April 2014, when BT first selected Ciena as its optical network solutions partner.
