McAllen Data Center and Asteroid to build the first IXP in South Texas

McAllen Data Center, the provider of colocation services on the US-Mexico border, and Asteroid have announced a partnership to build the first internet exchange point (IXP) in South Texas.
The new IXP will be based on Asteroid’s new lightweight design and located in McAllen Data Center’s headquarters in McAllen, Texas. As the first IXP on the border, the project creates new opportunities for the peering community to grow in Southern Texas and Mexico, the McAllen claimed.
Juan Salazar, CEO of McAllen Data Center, said: “My team did exhaustive research of the most successful IXPs in the world, because it is important to us to bring the very best experience to our clients. We decided to partner with Asteroid because of their deep experience in the Internet exchange space, both in Europe and the Americas.”
IXP’s enable local traffic exchange, improve network performance, reduce latency and remove the need for expensive transit arrangements.

Though there’s nothing new about IXP’s in general, the Asteroid platform sets a new standard for IXP’s with its efficient interconnection, built on lightweight, scalable architecture and advanced toolsets, the companies claimed in an announcement. While McAllen Data Center secure carrier neutral facilities, this partnership means new levels of interconnectivity resilience and uptime.
Mauricio Flores, the former sub-director of IP network engineering for Telefónica Mexico, was recently named as the new chief operating officer for McAllen Data Center. In his new role Flores responsibilities include driving growth for the company on the border.
