Ericsson launches NFV infrastructure solution

Ericsson has launched a verified network functions virtualisation (NFV) infrastructure solution which offers multivendor capabilities and combines a number of existing hardware from the Swedish firm.
The NFVi solution combines Ericsson's Hyperscale Datacenter System 8000 (HDS 8000), its cloud execution environment and cloud manager, its software defined networking solution, and its Blade Server Platform.
The Swedish firm claims this allows carriers deploying the NFVi solution more flexibility, as modular design components can be substituted depending on their requirements,
Ericsson claimed NFVi will be a first, incremental step in developing the infrastructure needed for future technologies such as 5G and the Internet of things, by supporting speed, agility and efficiency during deployment.
Susan James, head of product line for NFV Infrastructure, Ericsson, said: "Ericsson's NFVi solution is an important step on our journey to building the infrastructure for 5G and the Internet of Things.
“By offering a flexible, pre-integrated and verified open system platform, we can provide our customers with several different deployment options ranging all the way from full decoupling of NFV components to full stack solution deployment. This provides a shorter time to market, with increased speed, agility and efficiency for our customers deploying new services."
The vendor has already announced a number of NFV contracts with several tier 1 vendors, including the likes of Telstra, Telefonica, SoftBank, Digicel, and Swisscom.
Richard Schenk, head of network and data centre development, Swisscom said: "The advantage our customers will experience with Ericsson cloud and NFVi is that we can introduce new products. We will bring services which we do not know today, as in the IoT environment. We will also be able to configure services with network slices so that they fit exactly to the product that we have at this moment."
