Telstra launches mining unit

Telstra has partially acquired mine networking specialist CBO Telecommunications to form Telstra Mining Services.

The company has bought the network design and consulting services business of the company for an undisclosed sum for its “deep expertise across Wifi and mesh technologies and the design, build and maintenance of enterprise grade networks used in mine sites”.

The acquisition and creation of a mining division is part of Telstra’s strategy to build a significant global mining technology product and services business.

As part of the acquisition, Telstra has also hired Rio Tinto’s former head of automation technology Eric Nettleton and AgloAmerican’s recent head of technology and innovation Jeannette McGill.

David Keenan, Telstra’s global industries head, said the slump in commodity prices has created a “once in a lifetime shift” where miners are seeking technology innovation to help them “future-proof” their operations.

"This investment means we can confidently meet the industry's communication needs at Australian mine sites," added Keenan.
