Far EasTone and Ericsson to launch 5G lab in Taipei

Taiwan’s Far EasTone Telecommunications is partnering with Ericsson to launch the country’s first 5G laboratory.

The partnership between the two companies is said to be part of the operator’s plans to create an open 5G ecosystem, with an aim to begin trials of next-generation mobile technology in 2018 before an expected commercial launch in 2020.

“We are seeking a clearer picture of the 5G business. The cooperation with Ericsson will help us be better prepared to offer 5G services,” said Douglas Hsu, chairman of Far EastOne.

Built in New Taipei City’s Banciao district in the next quarter, the facility will be opened to hardware makers, software developers and platform developers.
