The company said the reorganisation is a move towards expansion, with new roles being created “in areas driving its growth”.
"Over the last three years Virgin Media has been transformed. We're expanding, investing and growing our business. The proposed reorganisation will give us an even sharper focus on the customer, network expansion and business growth,” said Tom Mockridge, CEO at Virgin Media.
Virgin Media employs 13,500 people directly; it has not disclosed which areas will be affected by the redundancies but confirmed that it is presently consulting with affected employees.
It aims to increase the number of staff in the UK and overseas from approximately 23,000 to over 25,000 in 2016 and 26,000 in 2017 to support upcoming projects.
One such project is Project Lighting, a five-year programme to extend its ultrafast broadband network. Virgin Media is said to invest £3 billion in the project which will create 1,000 apprenticeships.
Virgin Media was acquired by tycoon John Malone’s Liberty Global in 2013 for approximately $23 billion.
