PLDT president and CEO to retire by year end

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) has announced that its CEO, Napoleon Nazareno, will retire at the end of the year.

Chairman Manuel Pangilinan will assume his roles as head of PLDT and Smart.

Nazareno was due to retire in 2014 but was asked to stay for another year by the board to prepare for the launch of its digital transformation programme.

"We are indeed grateful for Polly's (Nazareno) many years of service as president and CEO of PLDT. Under his leadership, PLDT and Smart achieved unprecedented success in becoming the country’s leading telecommunications companies. Polly led the transformation of the landline business from an overwhelmingly voice-driven service to a broadband data-powered business,” said Pangilinan.

“This formidable task required not only converting PLDT’s legacy landline system into an all-Internet protocol next generation network but, more importantly, reinvigorating the structure and culture of PLDT into a much more market-driven, customer-centric organization," he added.

Nazareno will serve as strategic adviser and will remain on the board until a replacement is found. The company did not state a specific time frame to find a replacement.

Pangilinan noted that the group “prefers someone who is exposed in the digital sphere and to promote someone from inside.”
