Ericsson to develop AT&T’s TV service

AT&T has selected Ericsson to work on its TV platforms — both the existing U-verse broadband service and the satellite-delivered network it has acquired by buying DirecTV.

The platform will serve customers across both networks. AT&T completed the $49 billion acquisition of direct-to-home satellite service DirecTV in July 2015.

Enrique Rodriguez, executive vice president and chief technical officer of AT&T entertainment and internet services, said: “Combining these technologies together uniquely positions AT&T to offer consumers an unparalleled bundled video entertainment, mobile and broadband experience.”

Ericsson inherited the U-verse contract when it bought Microsoft Mediaroom in 2013 as part of its plan to build a portfolio of TV-related services.

“AT&T has long been one of the most future-oriented, pioneering operators in the industry and we look forward to helping them to evolve their platforms which will give consumers an advanced TV experience,” said Per Borgklint, senior vice president and head of the support solutions business unit at Ericsson.
