NEC to construct subsea cable in Western Malaysia

Telekom Malaysia has contracted NEC to construct its Sistem Kabel Rakyat 1 Malaysia (SKR1M) subsea cable which aims to connect Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

The 100G system will span 3,700km and is scheduled for completion in mid-2017. It is expected to enhance connectivity in the Western region of Malaysia.

NEC supplied Malaysia’s first domestic subsea cable system in 1980.

"Since then, NEC has continuously supplied its latest submarine cable systems for 35 years. Today, we pride ourselves on adding the SKR1M to our long list of contributions to the region," said Naoki Yoshida, GM, submarine network division, NEC.
