Telefonica to deploy next-generation metro network in Spain

Telefonica is to build a next-generation metro network across Spain using Juniper Networks SDN-enabled routers.

Telefonica is to build a next-generation metro network across Spain using Juniper Networks' SDN-enabled routers.

The IP network will deliver fixed and mobile broadband services as well as cloud services for businesses.

It will leverage the Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router portfolio. This includes the SDN-ready MX Series which can scale up to 80Tbps of system capacity, which is said to help Telefonica meet the increasing bandwidth and service demands of its customers.

Juniper was said to be selected for its strong NFV and SDN capabilities, which Telefonica hopes will reduce the network’s time-to-service activation and enable simpler overall operation and maintenance.

“We are making huge advancements toward our goal to simplify and modernise our network to offer differentiated services that greatly enhance the customer experience. Our new network supported by Juniper Networks will streamline connectivity with a seamless IP path from access to services and cut down the number of hops to traverse,” said Joaquin Mata, chief technology officer, Telefonica Spain.

At the end of August, Telefonica also selected Huawei for the implementation of its session border controller (SBC) project in Spain.
