The GSMA has appointed Mats Granryd as director general and member of the GSMA board effective January 2016.

Granryd, who served as Tele2 Group’s president of CEO from August 2010, will be replaced by CFO Allison Kirby.

Before his tenure at Tele2, Granryd spent 15 years at Ericsson in a variety of roles, most recently as its head of Northern Europe and Central.

“I am very pleased to welcome Mats Granryd as the GSMA’s new director general. Serving more than 3.7 billion unique subscribers globally, the mobile industry has fundamentally changed how individuals, businesses and governments alike communicate, interact and conduct their everyday lives,” said Fredrik Baksaas, chairman of the GSMA.

Tele2 has sought to reduce the number of markets in which it operates in from 24 to nine. In April 2015, the company announced the departure of its CTO and EVP Joachim Horn

Granryd takes over from Anne Bouverot, who is presently CEO and chairman of security and identity services vendor Morpho, based in Paris.
