Level 3 acquires DDoS mitigation firm

Level 3 Communications has acquired Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation company Black Lotus in a bid to enhance its security offering.

Following a recent report ‘Safeguarding the Internet: Level 3 Botnet Research Report’ which highlighted a need to invest in the DDoS market, Level 3 acquired Black Lotus on July 1 in an all-cash transaction.

The addition of Black Lotus is expected to complement Level 3’s existing DDoS service which was launched earlier this year and provides a network-based detection and mitigation scrubbing solution, as well as network routing and IP filtering services.

Black Lotus brings with it proxy-based DDoS mitigation services for application layer attacks and advanced behavioural analytics technology.

“Black Lotus proxy and behavioural technologies, combined with their experienced team of DDoS experts, perfectly complements Level 3's DDoS mitigation and threat intelligence capabilities,” said Chris Ritcher, SVP of managed security services at Level 3.

“With this acquisition, Level 3 continues its commitment of investing in a comprehensive portfolio of services that enhance the growth, efficiency and security of our customers' operations, helping enterprises combat the cyber-security challenges they face every day.”

Earlier this week, Level 3 was the victim of a cable attack in California, US, alongside Zayo Group.
