Vodafone spends big in German auction

Germany raised just over €5 billion in a spectrum auction last Friday, with Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica Deutschland and Vodafone Germany emerging as successful bidders.

Vodafone Germany spent highest, acquiring a total of 110MHz across four bands for approximately €2.1 billion. The operator said it will use the spectrum to enhance its 4G network, increasing data traffic capacity and speed on 4G while improving voice quality on GSM services.

Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica Deutschland spent €1.8 billion and €1.2 billion respectively.

The auction exceeded the reserve price of €1.5 billion as well as market predictions of €4.4 billion.

The auction was the first in Europe to include the low-frequency 700MHz band, which was previously used to carry the analogue signals of regional television stations.
