Telecom Italia/Orange merger not being discussed, says chairman

Giuseppe Recchi, chairman at Telecom Italia, said today that the company has had no contact with France’s Orange over a potential alliance, Reuters reports.

Earlier this month it was reported that the two companies were considering a tie-up, in a move that hints towards further consolidation in the European market, but Recchi today said that the Italian operator had been “very surprised” by the remarks.

“There is nothing on the table,” Recchi said during a financial conference when asked if Telecom Italia would consider an agreement with Orange. “We are focussed on the Italian and Brazilian markets.”

Last month, Telecom Italia said that it plans to invest €14.5 billion in faster broadband across both Italy and Brazil
