Turk Telekom International (TTI) has signed the construction and maintenance agreement (C&MA) and become an official member of the Sea-Me-We 5 cable consortium.

The 20,000km Sea-Me-We 5 submarine system is due to launch in 2016 and will span Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Western Europe.

TTI will add Marmaris in Turkey as a landing station to the subsea cable system; providing an alternative route via Turkey to neighbouring countries.

Cengiz Oztelcan, TTI’s CEO, said that joining the Sea-Me-We 5 consortium is an important part of the company’s strategy to reinforce Turkey as a hub between Southeast Asia and Western Europe.

“With the Sea-Me-We 5 cable system, we will strengthen our unique terrestrial network that ties three continents together through submarine capacities, and continue to provide our innovative, reliable and extensive services to our customers in an ever faster and stronger infrastructure,” Oztelcan said.

Other consortium members include Orange and TI Sparkle, with Japan’s NEC and France’s Alcatel-Lucent as official vendors for the project
