Chinese official denies merger claims
12 February 2015 |
An official at China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has refuted rumours that China Unicom and China Telecom are set to merge.
In a microblog, China Central Television quoted an unnamed official as saying that there “are no current plans to reform the telecoms industry”,
Recent online rumours have claimed that the Chinese government is planning to merge the two state-owned carriers.
Last October, the two operators were thought to be collaborating on the development of a content delivery network (CDN) firm in a bid to speed up internet access in the country.
