Telkom expands talks with MTN to include RAN outsourcing

Telkom, South Africa’s biggest landline provider, said today (December 31) that it is in talks with operator MTN South Africa to extend their roaming agreement to include the outsourcing of Telkom’s radio access network (RAN).

“Telkom and MTN South Africa remain in discussions regarding the potential extension of their existing roaming agreement to include bilateral roaming and outsourcing of the operation of Telkom’s radio access network,” shareholders were advised in a statement released by Telkom.

“The parties will update shareholders as soon as they receive the appropriate legal and regulatory approvals,” the statement added.

Both companies entered into a Heads of Agreement (HoA) in March, outlining intentions to conclude network sharing and roaming agreements.

Under the agreement, MTN will take over financial and operational responsibility for the roll-out and operation of Telkom’s RAN. Each party will also be able to roam on either company’s network. Telkom has previously said it hoped to conclude the proposal within the financial year, which ends on March 31 2015.

In November, Telkom said that such a move would give both operators larger voice and data capacity at a lower price.
