UK pushes ahead with white space technology

UK regulator Ofcom has revealed that it is ahead with plans to introduce more spectrum to the market by utilising white space technology.

Seven trials of the technology have already been held in the UK, with more scheduled over the coming months.

Ofcom expects the technology to be commercially rolled out in 2015, which would mark the UK as one of the first European countries to provide spectrum using white space.

The regulator has earmarked the additional spectrum to help support the growth of the UK’s Internet of Things (IoT) market.

The trials are said to be testing the operation of white space devices, white space databases used to identify available spectrum and the processes needed to minimise the risk of interference to existing spectrum users.

Trials in the UK have so far included a collaboration between Google, ZSL London Zoo, MediaTex and 6Harmonics, which saw live video streaming of the zoo’s animals using a TV white space network.
