Claro wins first licence in Brazil 4G auction

América Móvil’s Brazilian unit Claro has won a new national broadcast licence for 4G cell spectrum in the 700MHz range after a successful bid of $795 million.

Brazil’s two biggest carriers – Telefónica Brasil and TIM – will contest the remaining two national 4G licences, in what could prove a lucrative auction for the country’s government, given early indications.

The country’s smallest player Oi said last week it will not participate in the auction.

Brazil’s national telecoms regulator Anatel approved the auction in April this year.
