Huawei to invest $4 billion in fixed-line R&D

Chinese vendor Huawei Technologies is to invest over $4 billion in fixed broadband technology research and development (R&D) over the next three years.

Huawei said fixed broadband pipes remains part of its strategic direction, despite the company’s recent developments in the mobile market.

As part of the R&D investment, Huawei said it will research a range of basic technologies, including photonics used in fibre and will embark on developments in SDN.

The move comes as a surprise, given the continued growth in mobile broadband, with revenues in the fixed segment largely declining.

A UN report states mobile broadband has grown by 20% this year in worldwide users.
