Orange joins calls for consolidation in France

Orange has said there is an urgent need for consolidation in France and a move could be made in the coming weeks.

Stephane Richard, CEO at the company, said that he expects another deal to occur in the market following the tie-up between SFR and Numericable, which was signed last month.

“If something is to happen, it will happen in the coming weeks,” he said, speaking to local French radio.

According to Reuters, Orange is examining what role it can play in any possible consolidation, and it is rumoured that the company is interested in a merger with Bouygues Telecom, which was backed up last week by France’s economy minister, Arnaud Montebourg.

According to Montebourg, France will become a three-player market in the future. Bouygues is reportedly valued at €5 billion.
