Your OCEANS need YOU: "International Telecommunications World" to promote the use of submarine cables to mitigate tsunami hazards and climate change.

The ITW community is invited to assist a Joint Task Force (JTF) of UN agencies (ITU-WMO-UNESCO IOC), carriers, vendors, scientists and legal experts in working to mitigate tsunami hazards and climate change.

The JTF is developing technology requirements and demonstrator projects to add pressure, temperature and acceleration sensors to the web of new and refurbished submarine fibre optic cables spanning the world's oceans.

The major societal benefit is a tsunami warning system, as well as an unprecedented study of deep ocean temperature and circulation that dramatically affect our climate.

Trans-oceanic cables are amplified every 60-120km and a small, low-powered package of sensors laid with each 'repeater' can transmit real-time measurements to the landing stations taking minimal capacity (<0.1%) of one fibre pair and costing only 4-8% of the construction cost.

These sensors capture the data needed to predict tsunami arrival times much more quickly and reliably than presently possible, leading to many more lives saved. The JTF is seeking your help or that of your company/agency to drive this dream to reality, contact via and http://www.itu.int/go/ITU-T/greencable
