Bahraini operator Batelco has announced the appointment of Alan Whelan as group CEO.

Former CEO Shaikh Mohamed bin Isa Al Khalifa stepped down nearly a year ago and a supervisory committee of the board of directors took the lead while a search was carried out for Khalifa’s successor.

Whelan has served in several leadership roles, including business manager and global joint venture leader at BT, VP for EMEA at AT&T, managing director of Cable and Wireless’ wholesale and enterprise businesses and president for EMEA at cloud services provider Global Cloud Xchange.

“Mr. Whelan has a proven record of achievement and we are confident that he has the necessary credentials to meet the stringent criteria required for this key role,” said Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, chairman at Batelco.

“My colleagues on the board and the executive management team are looking forward to working alongside Mr. Whelan and offering our full support,” he added.

In November last year, Batelco announced the appointment of Faisal Qamhiyah as CFO.
