BT set to launch mobile quad-play offering

BT is set to launch an offensive against mobile operators in the UK by offering bundled packages for consumers, utilising its broadband network and 4G spectrum.

After the success of its pay-TV offering, which launched last year, BT is now looking to revive its mobile operations through the spectrum it acquired last year.

Following its sale of O2 over a decade ago, BT has not been a major provider of mobile services.

Under its latest plans however, the company is looking to offer households in the UK TV, mobile, fixed and broadband services as part of a combined quad-play offering – a package that is offered across the US and Europe.

It is likely to launch at the end of the year and focus on business customers, before expanding to retail consumers. Data will be a key focus for BT, and the company is reportedly in early talks with handset manufacturers to produce devices.

Analysts are suggesting BT is using mobile to offset the declines they are suffering in fixed-line voice services, as well as a way for the company to utilise their strong brand to attract customers to a bundled package offering.

Quad-play offerings in the UK represent a small market, with less than one in 10 taking mobile services and a broadband offering from companies such as Virgin Media. The package could become more common, however, with large telecoms groups – including Vodafone and Liberty Global – making acquisitions to combine cable TV and mobile plays.
