Ericsson to deploy LTE network in Iraq

Swedish equipment vendor Ericsson has signed a contract with Iraqi internet and communications provider Tishknet for the deployment of an LTE TDD network in the country.

According to local reports, 4G LTE services will be initially launched in the north eastern Kurdistan region, and the network is designed to deliver high-speed internet connectivity to Tishknet customers.

“Our customers’ needs are evolving rapidly and LTE provides them with access to innovative broadband services,” said Firia Ali, CEO at Tishknet.

“The Kurdistan region is one of the country’s most active business hubs and we hope to roll out the service across other regions in the near future.”

Ericsson will implement its RBS 600 base stations as well as its Evolved Packet Core network and the two companies plan to establish a long-term LTE strategy in Iraq.

“The power and success of LTE globally has highlighted the increasing need of the consumer for quick information access,” said Tarek Saadi, president of Ericsson’s northern Middle East unit.

“The launch of LTE in Iraq is an indication of the country’s ICT sector growth and fast development. We will be working closely with Tishknet to further strengthen our relationship and optimise the benefits of LTE deployment across the country.”

Ericsson appears to be placing a more concentrated focus on the Middle East, having announced a partnership with Bahrain’s Batelco for an LTE upgrade in the country on September 25.
