Verizon increases 100G footprint in the US and Europe

US operator Verizon has expanded 100G coverage on its long-haul network in the US and Europe by adding the system to over 4,800 miles of its global IP network during the first half of 2013.

The expansion includes almost 4,500 miles of the US Verizon network and brings the company's total deployment of 100G in the country to approximately 21,400 miles.

Routes featuring 100G now include Seattle to Salt Lake City, Indianapolis to St Louis, St Louis to Memphis, Charlotte to Nashville and Cleveland to Detroit.

It is aiming to deploy an additional 8,700 100G miles in the US by the end of the year, with similar expansions planned in Europe.

Verizon has already deployed 100G on the 350 mile Brussels to Frankfurt route, bringing its 100G network across Europe to 5,100 miles. It said that it aims to deploy a further 1,400 miles by the end of the year.

“Not only does Verizon have one of the largest global networks, we have one of the most robust and sophisticated networks, with 100G technology deployed on multiple routes in the US and Europe,” said Kyle Malady, senior VP of global network operations and engineering.

“As long as our bandwidth demand grows, we’ll continue deploying high bit-rate technology that underlies the superior experience that our business and consumer customers expect,” he added.

Verizon said the increasing demand for bandwidth predominately comes from backbone capacity, required to stay ahead of drivers including OTT video, cloud services, 4G LTE mobile technology and collaboration services.

The company is continuing its partnership with Ciena for the 100G deployments.
