KT to launch LTE-A this month

KT will launch LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) services in South Korea this month, in a bid to keep up with rival operators, according to local reports.

Last week, the South Korean firm obtained 15MHz of 1800MHz spectrum in the country’s auction, enabling the operator to offer the high-speed service.

KT is expected to launch LTE-A in Seoul this month and plans to expand the service to an additional five cities by March 2014.

In a press conference this week, KT’s president, Pyo Hyun-myung, told reporters that the company expected nationwide LTE-A coverage by July 2014.

KT appears to be aggressively targeting the growth of LTE and LTE-A worldwide, and in March this year the company partnered with the Rwandan government to deploy a wholesale LTE network in the country.
