Ciena partners with Retelit for Italian network upgrade

Italian infrastructure and service provider Retelit has partnered with network specialist Ciena for the deployment of the latter’s converged packet optical solutions in the country.

It is hoped that the deployment will upgrade Retelit’s network and provide improved efficiency, latency and capacity scalable up to 100G.

This upgraded, low-latency network will be deployed across eight metropolitan locations in Italy and is designed to support applications such as high-frequency trading, e-healthcare and real-time data replication.

“Ciena’s converged packet optical solutions will enable us to reduce the complexities in our network, while exponentially increasing capacity to meet the growing market demand caused by the dramatically rising use of high-capacity broadband services and technologies,” said Enrico Mondo, general manager at Retelit.

Ciena will also deploy its unified management system to ensure comprehensive management, visualisation and end-to-end control of the network.

“Demand for bandwidth is continuing to increase at a rapid pace, and service providers need a flexible, scalable infrastructure in place to help their customers meet this demand,” said Virginie Hollebecque, Ciena’s regional managing director for South Europe, the Mediterranean and Africa.

Phase one of the project will upgrade the backbone spanning Milan to Rome and is due to complete at the end of October.

Ciena partnered with Telefónica in February this year for what was claimed to be Brazil’s first 100G network deployment.
