SK Telecom launches LTE-A services

Korea’s SK Telecom has today launched what it claims to be the world’s first LTE-Advanced network.

The LTE-A services are designed to offer network speeds of up to 150Mbps, which is double the speed of the existing LTE and three times faster than the 3G network.

The company has launched these services less than two years after commercialising the first LTE service in Korea in July 2011.

LTE-A is expected to support SK Telecom’s content services, and allow for the introduction of high-quality 3G videoconferencing.

The services will be initially available in Seoul and the surrounding areas, as well as 42 cities in Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do, and 103 university areas.

The move suggests that the company is running ahead of schedule as in an interview with Capacity earlier this year, SK Telecom said it was likely to be running the LTE-A services as of September 2013.
