Neotel to launch LTE network

South African telco Neotel is expected to roll out its LTE network in September this year, following a successful trial.

The company reportedly trialled the network at its campus in Midrand, Gauteng, and achieved speeds of 70Mbps.

“It is no longer a trial,” Sunil Joshi, CEO at Neotel, told reporters.

“We should be up and running in the second half of the second quarter.”

The service is expected to be initially available in Gauteng using the 1800MHz frequency and 50 base stations.

The company is in the process of implementing the LTE infrastructure, according to reports.

In October last year, Vodacom launched what it claimed to be South Africa’s first commercial LTE servicein Johannesburg.
