Tunisiana and Orange partner with Interoute for European submarine cable

Operators Tunisiana and Orange Tunisia have signed a partnership agreement with Interoute to build a submarine cable connecting Tunisia to the company’s pan-European network.

The submarine cable, named Didon, has been commissioned to help address the growing demand for fixed and mobile broadband services in the Tunisian region.

Didon is set to span 170 kilometres from Tunisian city Kélibia to Interoute’s landing station in Mazara del Vallo, Siciliy, and handle capacity of up to 100Gbps using Alcatel-Lucent submarine technology.

The development is scheduled for completion in April 2014.

“The Didon cable will provide increased capacity and better service to the seven million consumers and businesses that rely on Tunisiana,” said Ken Campbell, CEO of Tunisiana.

“This investment is also a testament to our belief in the potential for growth in Tunisia as a hub for the region,” he added.

Philippe Dumont, president of Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks, added: “The deployment of this new network will give a further boost to capacity and traffic protection in the Mediterranean hub.”
