Australian spectrum auction set to start

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is set to hold “one of the largest spectrum auctions ever” in Australia tomorrow.

Expected to last several weeks, the auction will offer licences in 700MHz and 2.5GHz bands for a 15-year period. The 700MHz band has nine lots of 10MHz, offered in paired configuration of 2x5MHz.

2.5GHz band has fourteen lots of varying proportions and is also offered in paired configuration of 2x5MHz.

Starting prices for a licence in the 700MHz band are reported to be around $319 million with reserve prices not set in the 2.5GHz band.

ACMA plans to announce results from mid to late May, 2013.
