Telefónica España partners with Alcatel-Lucent for 400Gbps solution

Telefónica España has claimed its network is the first to successfully trial 100, 200 and 400Gbps over an optical network using Alcatel-Lucent technology.

The operator used Alcatel-Lucent’s agile optical networking solution to enable network flexibility, which has proved a challenge in relation to the increasing demand for bandwidth. The technology is designed to double an operator’s fibre capacity without having to invest in additional fibre infrastructure.

By maximising fibre performance, the vendor’s solution assigns each channel only the spectrum required to perform the task, adjusting the parameters to find optimum performance.

The trial was held over a distance of around 650 km, the network’s longest available path.

“Solutions that make the best use of our existing infrastructure, like the photonic mesh technology demonstrated in this trial, are how we will maintain our lead in the marketplace,” said Manuel Fernández Daza, director of transport networks technology at Telefónica España.

Alcatel-Lucent, who have performed successful trials of 400G in France and Canada, is adapting existing networks to reach new speeds with its technology. Roque Lozano, president Alcatel-Lucent Spain, commented: “Telefónica trusted us to perform what we said we would do on their network, and we did.”

“We’ve made significant strides in developing and bringing to market a solid 400 Gbps offering.”
