Bahrain delays spectrum auction

Bahrain has halted its radio spectrum auction following an appeal from wireless broadband operator, Menatelecom.

The Bahrain Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) was due to auction 12 lots of spectrum on March 31, with the intention of using it for the much-needed roll-out of LTE and 4G networks across the kingdom.

The auction was initially open to all operators, but mobile operators Batelco, Zain and Viva Bahrain raised objections with the TRA. A notice was then issued declaring that the auction would be limited to the three MNOs.

Menatelecom has allegedly filed three cases with the Bahraini court appealing against the decision for exclusivity with further requests for the auction to be delayed.

The TRA told reporters that the next court hearing will be on April 4.

At Capacity Middle East last month, Rashid Abdulla, CEO at Batelco Bahrain, emphasised the need for investment in LTE services in the kingdom.
