Iliad will not merge with Free Mobile

French company Iliad will not pursue a merger with low cost operator Free Mobile.

Despite increasing speculation, the company’s deputy CEO said on Thursday it has no plans for Free to combine with the rivalling French company.

“It is not on the agenda,” Thomas Reynaud told Reuters. “What counts for us is to win fixed-line and mobile market share, to install over the long term and to use our networks.”

There are now increasing rumours that Iliad could possibly merge with SFR, Vivendi’s telecoms French unit, however it is thought that the country’s regulators will be against such a deal.

Iliad, France’s newest operator, is looking to boost its market share to 8%, after gaining 5.2 million customers last year, and further fuelling the price war in France.

The company reported an increase in sales of almost 50%, rising to €3.15 billion, compared to analysts’ forecasts of €3.08 billion.
