SK Telecom and Nokia Siemens Networks to sign testing agreement

SK Telecom and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) are to sign an agreement on February 27 2013 to carry out testing on NSN’s Liquid Applications, according to a statement today.
Liquid Applications operates on SK Telecom’s LTE network and the agreement, to be signed at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona this week, follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which both companies signed in August last year.
Liquid Applications is a network technology designed to help operators provide customers with a personalised mobile broadband experience, and the agreement states that SK Telecom will assess NSN’s Radio Applications Cloud Server (RACS) which enables the application.
SK Telecom is reported to be the first operator to test Liquid Applications in an LTE environment, and it claims it will focus on Service-Aware RAN (Radio Access Network), an intelligent base station providing localised processing, storage and access to real-time radio.
“Telecom providers are realising that optimised transmission of data alone can no longer guarantee success in the market,” said Choi Jin-sung, EVP and head of ICT R&D Division at SK Telecom.
“SK Telecom will work closely with Nokia Siemens Networks to bring innovative changes to people’s lives by developing and applying new network technologies.”
Jarmo Häkkinen, head of mobile broadband value creation at Nokia Siemens Networks, added: “Through Liquid Applications, SK Telecom will be able to transform its base stations into a unique value creation engine to provide a uniquely personalised customer experience.”
“SK Telecom’s dense network of mobile base stations transformed with Liquid Applications processes content locally and interacts with subscribers to provide a totally unique mobile broadband experience,” he added.
Service-Aware RAN will be showcased by SK Telecom at MWC.
The agreement follows the pair’s recent partnership to deploy 100G in January this year.
