BT launches cloud-based Microsoft Lync service

BT has launched a cloud service-based Microsoft Lync 2010 to provide unified communications to enterprises without the need for significant capital investment.
The BT One Cloud which includes instant messaging, presence, audio, video and web conferencing and enterprise voice is being sold on a pay-per-user basis.
It is being offered following a survey conducted by BT which found that 62% of global executives wanted integrated instant messaging and email and 68% cloud-based file services.
“We are now offering BT One Cloud firstly to customers in the US, and then rolling out globally. Based on our track record of global service provision, we are uniquely positioned to meet key requirements in delivering the full Enterprise Voice features of Microsoft Lync from the cloud. We are also using Lync in-house as a productivity tool for our own employees, and BT is part of the first wave of Windows 8 with 3,000 seats already deployed,” said Neil Sutton, VP of global portfolio at BT Global Services.
The provider claims that its cloud offering is designed to provide the full functionality of an on-premises Microsoft Lync deployment and has partnered with audio, video and gateway device vendors to provide the service.
The company is also planning to combine its on-premises and cloud-based Lync offerings to offer hybrid solutions to companies.
BT said that it had already completely its first sale of the BT One Cloud to a global energy company, and as part of the contract will design, install and integrate the service for 10,000 Microsoft Lync seats globally.
