SK Telecom partners with Alcatel-Lucent’s Bell Labs

SK Telecom has signed an MOU with Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm Bell Labs to collaborate for projects on data and next-generation video technologies.

As part of the agreement, both companies are set to carry out studies on big data analytics engines, in addition to next-generation video analytics technology and systems. Bell Labs has been established since 1925, and developed core technologies for communications services, including the UNIX operating system and cellular telephony, holding over 29,000 active patents.

SK Telecom said the tie up between the companies related to big data demands in its home market. The Korean telco already operates Geovision, a business platform offering site location and trading area analysis.

It is also actively developing next-generation video technologies.

SK Telecom further said the deal is designed to create new opportunities and innovative services to lead growth in the Korean ICT industry. “The combination of SK Telecom’s experience in commercialising diverse telecommunications services with Bell Labs’ expertise in big data and video related technologies will lead to the creation of new innovative services that bring greater value and convenience to customers,” said Byun Jae-Woan, CTO at SK Telecom.

Randy Giles, executive director and president of Bell Labs Seoul drew on SK Telecom’s expertise in LTE as a further reason why the two companies worked well to research for next-generation services. “Our joint research conducted under the MOU will serve as an important milestone in the development of services based on data and video analytics technologies,” he added.
