MetroPCS claims to launch world’s first VoLTE service

US carrier MetroPCS has claimed to have launched the world’s first Voice over LTE (VoLTE) service solution.

VoLTE services will be available on the LG Connect 4G Android smartphone initially, before rolling the service out on other smartphones in the coming weeks.

Roger Linquist, chairman and CEO at MetroPCS, said the move to VoLTE will allow the company to “achieve significant spectral efficiencies”.

He said: “This will increase network capacity so that we can enhance the 4G LTE experience that our customers have today at tremendous value. VoLTE also provides foundational capability for future Rich Communication Services (RCS) which we plan to launch later this year.”

VoLTE capabilities will be added to MetroPCS’ 4G LTE handsets, with consumers subject to additional benefits of voice and data over LTE services. The capability will work on the handset, and it will run regardless of the handset or network used on the other end of the call.

MetroPCS was in fact the first US carrier to deploy a 4G LTE network in 2010, and has since built out its 4G LTE network to cover 90% of its CDMA footprint.
