E-commerce turnover to reach €1.34 trillion by 2016

The turnover of e-commerce will continue to grow steadily, reaching double digit growth rates of more than €1.340 billion in 2016 according to a report by research firm IDATE. This is a significant rise from the €717 billion recorded in 2011.

Growth will be fuelled by an increasing number of internet users, the increasing number of users shopping and paying online, increasing average annual purchase volume per buyer, new sales strategies and e-commerce’s resilience to the financial crisis.

The Asia-Pacific region is set to see the largest growth, from €190.87 billion in 2011 to €417.9 billion in 2016. While the US will see the smallest growth, from €225.5 billion in 2011 to €353.2 billion in 2016.

Online video is considered to be a major content segment with strong monetisation potential through fee-based services. It is estimated that it will represent a market of over €12 billion in 2016 in OTT distribution.
