Beltelecom to launch 100G WDM network

Belarusian state-owned incumbent Beltelecom is to launch the country’s first commercial 100G WDM network.

The 1,200km network, which is being deployed by Huawei, will span from Grodno, bordering Poland, to Vitebsk, bordering Russia. It will have a capacity of up to 8Tbs and will offer ultra-broad bandwidth for data services in Belarus as well as leased-line services, transmitted between Europe and Asia, for Russian carriers.

“I am confident that the commercial coherent 100G system will ensure ultra-broad bandwidth with high stability for the national backbone and ultimately help to serve our customers better than ever," said Sergey Sivodedov, CTO at Beltelecom

Huawei first trialed 100G transmission services on Beltelecom’s national backbone network in November 2011. The trial was carried out over a link connecting Russia and Poland.

Beltelecom holds a monopoly on the fixed-line market in Belarus with an estimated 86.3% of broadband subscribers in December 2011.
