3 Italia announces €1 billion network investment

3 Italia has announced plans to invest €1 billion to upgrade its network in terms of coverage, capacity and performance.

The upgrade plan will involve the construction of over 2,000 sites before the end of 2012 in over 800 municipalities, particularly in the north east and south of the country.

Under the planned investment, 3 Italia is seeking to offer top speeds of 42Mbps which are already available in Milan, Rome, Palermo and Bologna across the network by 2012. 3 Italia also intends to launch LTE services next year with service speeds exceeding 100Mbps, and plans to increase its backhaul capacity eight-fold with additional fibre links and enhanced transmission links.

The investment plans have been made to meet the boom in mobile data traffic on 3’s Italian network, which has grown 263% over the past two years.
